Do These Mom Jeans Make My Butt Look Big?

When I was very young, my mother never bought clothes for herself. It wasn't until I was in Middle School that she started purchasing clothing for herself, and even then she was shopping at places like Stuarts in Town East Mall. If you are not familiar with Stuarts, think bargain basement clothing store where the clothes are arranged by color. And even at these shops, my mother would only buy things that were on the clearance rack.

I know part of the reason she did this was because she was spending her clothing money on my brother and I rather than herself. I also know that part of the reason she did this was because she liked to play the role of the martyr and tell my brother and I that she didn't have any new clothes because we got all the new stuff.

I always told myself that when I grew up, I would find a way to be a stylish mom while keeping my child properly clothed at the same time. As I got a little older, I began to notice that many moms seem to drop out the realm of hipness in many arenas: clothing, music, hair style, etc. I often wondered what it was that made them give up.

Now I know.

I don't want to be a frumpy shlumpadinka (yeah, most days I hear Oprah's voice calling me a shlumpadinka as I slide on my Old Navy yoga pants and the hoodie from the High School I taught at three years ago), but it seems almost unavoidable.

First, there is the time issue. Baby is 16 months old and I am just now at a point where I feel like I can get her fed, diapered, dressed, loaded into her carseat (complete with diaper bag full of all the necessities) and still have time to actually consider what I am wearing and maybe even throw on a little mascara. I thought when I had more experience as a mom and more time (thanks to a more independent/older child) that I would return to my put-together and fashionable looking self.

Of course it is not that easy. I am realizing time is not the issue here. I have missed over two years of normal fashion trends thanks to 9 months of pregnancy/maternity clothes (yes, I was one of those lucky people that started showing and thus needing to wear maternity clothes beginning at 12 weeks) and that lovely "4th trimester" where you look about 5 months pregnant for about 6 months after giving birth (What? Did you walk out of the delivery room with six-pack abs?) coupled with the fact that I have been focusing on Baby for the past 16 months rather than the style pages of Elle magazine.

Can we also throw in the fact that my body has changed, ahem, a bit. So I am not really confident in knowing what looks good on my body. But I do know you aren't going to be seeing those skinny jeans on Pearl any time soon. And while we are on the topic of those damned skinny jeans... HELLO!!! Those are for women with match-stick legs. If you have much more than femur hanging down from your hips, those jeans do not look good. And I have to laugh at the fact that it is quite possible that the skinny jean isn't even trendy any more, but that is my point... how would I know??!?!

So anyway, here I am, removed from the fashion world for two years and I have no idea what to wear. I see other moms wearing these type of boots...

But, I always see them with their jeans tucked into the boot... and the two pair of jeans that fit me are Seven For All Mankind with a flare leg, which I don't think I could cram into those boots. So does this mean I need to find new jeans? Because I am thinking my jeans are out of style anyway... too low on the rise, to flared at the leg... but I have no idea which jeans are in style now and I already said I am NOT buying those damn skinny jeans and looking like a Glamour Don't. And once I get this boot and jeans thing figured out, what in the hell am I supposed to wear for a top?

Okay, I am starting to hyperventilate, and I haven't even gotten to the whole accessories thing. I think I've been seeing all of these cute belts being worn over shirts, up high, like some sort of extra boob support. I wouldn't even begin to know how to pull that off, but it's just as well because that trend is probably over by now anyway. And how about those gigantic clunky rings I am seeing everywhere. How am I supposed to change a diaper wearing a ring the size of a jar of baby food?

Every time I think about trying to get my act together, I feel so overwhelmed, I just want to give up. Do I have the time and money to replace my entire wardrobe? No. It doesn’t matter because even if I did have the time and money, I wouldn't know what to do with it. So I guess this is how it happens: my mom got off the bus in 1973 and here I am about to step off into 2006 for all eternity.

Oh girl! I love you. You are too funny.

Just go wander around the mall for a bit. You'll get the hang of it. Boob belts and boots must be a CA thing--over here in Butthole, PA everyone is wearing jeans and sweaters. But intricately layered sweater with 4+ different co-ordinated thin tops underneath...it's like a rainbow is dangling from your waist. Perfection. :)

Are flared jeans out? I think I've only seen boot cut in the stores, but I don't exactly shop at anything $$$ than NY&Co.

Welcome to the club! I love it when we have new members! LOL!

Everyone has their own style, basically whatever you feel most attractive in, or confident. My advice would be to buy a few trendy accessories or a top or boots that are the "new thing" but just keep it classic.
To me classic means solid colored tops, jeans that are straight leg, medium wash, no weird fading or colored threading. and no stretch....LOL...stretching jeans are just crazy to me... LOL
If you have a great set of basics, you can jazz it up with a great print shirt...or a fabulous pair of boots!
Okay - just my VERY uneducated 2 cents. :) I say all this as I sit here in my grey long sleeved cotton shirt and black velour pants and jacket with my running shoes and silver hoop earrings. Yes, classic....LOL. NOT.

Ok, here's the thing (and remember this is coming from a woman who has not yet showered today and it is nearly 4:00pm, ahem), but I think this phenomenon also happens because of how we SAHMS now spend our time. Would you wear boots like that to a playgroup? Will your baby be impressed with your perfect jeans? Probably not.

Maybe things are different in your area, but here, when moms dress up for the playground or the chik-fil-a, the rest of us moms get really confused.

Girl, you only need a few key pieces! Buy yourself a pair of skinny jeans that are tapered at the ankle... these will easily fit into a cute pair of flat riding boots. That is your winter wardrobe. Any cute top will do that doesn't cling to the belly (or maybe that's my issue). Don't give up. It is possible to be a mom and still look cute. I promise.

Honey you are a girl after my own heart! I wear hand me ups from my baby sister, who is in college. She is 12 years younger than me. She is only 6 years older than my daughter. Imagine what I look like! LOL...

I so understand! This is why I have made it my resolution to only buy things that I love and that look good on me. No, I will not buy a whole wardrobe at once, but I vow to buy one thing a week until I actually DO have something fit to wear!

Pearl! You are leaving me in tears over here. Laughing and crying! I'm a work at home/stay at home mom. My work ensembles used to all end in vowels with fabulous shoes to match. I was semi-fabulous with a sense of style. My current work wardrobe is more than a little relaxed. I'M IN PJ'S ALL DAY!

Our parents downturn in fashion was a sign of the times. Let's all say it together. POLYESTER.

My mother is now 78 and a fashion DIVA. She looks phenomenal when we go out and I look like I'm not quite sure if I'm done sleeping yet.

My kids are incredibly well dressed and my husband, under my dedicated tutelage, is incredibly turned out as well. It's only me. Two babies and lack of enthusiasm to clothe a lot more body than I'd care to clothes has made me...shall we say...frumpy.

However...when I try...and by try I mean when I shower...and actually do my hair....I throw on my boot cut jeans....a top that looks like I haven't worn it in the preschool class and pair it with fabulous shoes and a great handbag.

I have found that fabulous shoes and a great handbag cover a multitude of sins. And they always are the right size.

Tim Gunn has a show on Bravo that'll teach you how to dress for your body type, plus how to pick stuff that won't be out of style in a year. :)

wow, some GREAT fashion advice in these comments for moms. seriously!

i, too am fashion-challenged. i have the same long hair and haircut that i had in high school, but thankfully don't wear the same jeans. stone wash, high-waist went out in the 90s (thank god). anyhoo, i agree with most of your commenters - you don't really need much. and listen to steph, tim gunn has some great advice. another great show is what not to wear on TLC.

personally? i wear the boots outside the jeans. and i wear low-waist, bootcut jeans with layered t-shirts like ALL THE TIME. it's my go-to. and if i were on what not to wear, stacie and clinton would berate me for not acting my age. heh.

good luck! :)

oh you are so on (and I'm so sorry to have missed your blog up until now)...
I keep saying I'm at the 'in-between' stage...too old for juniors, way too young for mom clothes...

I love style and new trends, Ijust find that my body type is never the right one for whatever is currently in. You need to find something classic and go with that. I bought skinny jeans from Old Navy for under 30 bucks and pair them with a flowy top and flats. I purchased denim-looking leggings from Target and pair those in my boots. Remember with leggings, any shirt you wear should cover you ass, otherwise you end up looking vulgar.

Don't hyperventilate, just take some time perusing the magazines, you'll figure it out.

I love your blog! This post was great! I feel much the same way, but like Jaci said, wandering around the mall in a hip city will help you sort it out.
I can definitely say that right now those boots with the jeans INSIDE are in. Everyone in France was wearing them March/April 08, which I told hubby "just watch, that'll be the style come fall in USA." Yep.
My friend wears and swears by True Religion jeans, but I don't have $150 plus to plop down on a pair of jeans. Got some not-mom-jeans at Macy's for $20, cover the muffin top, thank the lord!, with my new Steve Madden boots similar to what you posted. However, I just can't do the big fat boob belt.
